WELCOME

Alex Harrow is a visual artist from Perthshire who attempts to  capture the emotive sense which life conveys through vibrant colour hues depicting memories that hold sentimental value

About

My name is Alexander Harrow

I practice mediums in metal, sculpture, woodblock relief print, oil paint, and pastel. Often working across multiple disciplines, I use relief prints enlarged from previous sketches as the foundation for my oil paintings.

I explore life through color, capturing moments to impose a bias into situations. Using color, I convey emotion, whether it’s through the blues of sorrow or the light of joy. I reflect on how, as a society, we often focus on the positive aspects of life while ignoring the negative. My work highlights that to truly appreciate the beauty of life, one must experience both the dark shadows and moments of despair.

I address issues in today’s society such as social isolation, mental health, and addiction, often conveying these ideas through bright hues that contrast with these themes.

Depicting Scottish landscapes, still life, and people, I portray the vibrant emotions attached to poignant moments. Influenced by art movements such as impressionism, expressionism, and fauvism, I incorporate their ideas and techniques while bridging them into a contemporary context through my stylized work.

Currently, I am exploring the history and effects of substance abuse within the arts, focusing on how this correlates to the production of great works at the expense of the artist’s health. I also evaluate the societal implications of addiction, as people willingly waste away their lives seeking the next high, whether through the bottom of a bottle or more potent means, to avoid their lows.
